Addictions and Life Skills Counsellor Contract (As Soon As Possible to March 2018)

This position provides an in-house addictions program with a life skills component for clients at both the Scarborough Shelters, while adhering to the mission statement and policies & procedures of Homes First Society.

Job Description:

  • Provide individual addictions counselling to Homes First clients
  • Provide one-on-one supports for managing addictions
  • Work one on one with each client, from a client-centered approach, allowing clients to identify their area of need
  • Collaborate with clients to create individual care plans
  • Work with clients to support and assist them through intense case management framework around issues of addictions
  • Organize and facilitate a group addictions counselling session weekly
  • Assist clients to learn skills to maintain and improve their daily living
  • Organize and facilitate a life skills class weekly
  • Coordinate information sessions and workshops with coworkers for the clients benefit
  • Coordinate onsite staff support
  • Maintain client records professionally and confidentially in accordance with Homes First standards.


  • Post-secondary degree in Addictions or a related field; Canadian Certified Addiction Counsellor certificate from the Canadian Addiction Counsellor’s Certification Federation an asset
  • Minimum of 3 years addictions counselling experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience
  • Demonstrated understanding of the psychology of addiction, issues underlying addiction, trauma and mental health issues
  • Experienced in case management, group facilitation and teaching adults
  • Proven interviewing and counselling skills
  • Exceptional communication skills – written, verbal, and interpersonal
  • Excellent organization and time management skills
  • able to work independently and in inter-dependent teams, with minimum supervision in a busy and flexible environment
  • Certificates in First Aid, CPR, Crisis Prevention and Intervention an asset
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Outlook
  • Experience working in a shelter setting an asset
  • Cultural-sensitivity training an asset
  • Ability to work evenings


Working in an environment where there may be smoke is required.
