Assistant Controller

Job Summary

WE is looking for a strong accounting professional to lead our accounting team through a maternity leave.  Reporting in to the Head of Finance and Accounting, the Director of Accounting is the key leader for the Accounting team for all of WE.  

The Director of Accounting will assist in preparing all statements which are to comply with all regulatory and accounting guidelines.  You will be responsible for identifying and preventing discrepancies and setting up and maintaining control systems. 

The goal of this role is to lead and contribute to the accounting and financial processes of the company and ensure accurate financial reporting and control.   

Responsibilities and Duties

Leadership & Employee Engagement

  • Develop and execute meaningful Growth and Success plans and recognize team development needs; taking an active role in addressing gaps
  • Manage accounting department with 20+ staff and provide guidance, trainings and directions to ensure staff are equipped with necessary knowledge to meet department’s objectives and responsibilities 

External Reporting  

  • Create the processes and systems to ensure accurate reporting
  • Support and leadership in annual financial audit and grant audit by providing supporting documents to external auditors and implement recommendations from audit findings
  • Responsible for the preparation of the company’s external financial statements in compliance with official guidelines and requirements
  • Supervise the completion of government filings, include but not limit to sales tax, HST/GST returns, property tax rebate, WSIB, EHT, CSST, T4/T4A, 1099 and registered charity return
  • Coordinate financing arrangements for fixed asset purchases and corporate lines of credit 

System and Internal Control & Reporting 

  • Oversee the accounting and payroll function, which includes intercompany accounting, cash management and reconciliation, financial reporting, balance sheet management and payroll processing
  • Manage journal entries, invoices etc. and reconcile accounts for the quarterly or annual closing 
  • Maintain complete and accurate transactions in Microsoft Dynamics accounting system  
  • Evaluate accounting and internal control system and offer recommendations for continued improvement
  • Access current accounting operations and develop accounting strategies to ensure they are in line with organizational objectives
  • Develop and execute the framework for and implementation of a consistent, regular exercise to obtain a forward-looking view on business. This will be done through the management of monthly and quarterly financial closing and reviews.
  • Develop and enforce accounting policies and procedures to ensure organization’s financial records in compliance with accounting standards in Canada and US 

Functional Competencies

  • Demonstrated experience and leadership skills in a similar role
  • Solid knowledge of GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) and regulations
  • Excellent knowledge of accounting and financial processes (budgeting, financial closure, reporting etc.)
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Ability to sustain a broad-based knowledge of the WE’s strategy and long range plans
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Results-oriented and is able to lead change with a culture of continuous improvement
  • Strong MS Office suite skills (Excel, PowerPoint, Word)
  • Experience with Microsoft Dynamics and Salesforce 

Qualifications and Skills

  • CPA/CA designation
  • University Degree in Accounting, Business or similar discipline, MBA or similar post-secondary education
  • Minimum of 7-10 years of relevant experience
  • Experience in the charity industry in Canada preferred
  • Experience managing multinational organizational books preferred
