This is a Contract position in Vankleek Hill, ON posted June 22, 2025.

The Township of Champlain is seeking a dynamic and motivated individual to fill the position of Building Inspector.

The Township of Champlain is an active municipality situated in eastern Ontario, just 45 minutes from Ottawa’s downtown core. With a population of nearly 10,000 people, we are constantly seeing growth in our communities, as houses, businesses, and public services continue to be developed. Reporting to the Director of Building & By-Law, the building inspector assists in the administration and enforcement of the Ontario Building Code, the Building By-Law and all other related by-laws.

  • Conduct detailed plan examinations to ensure compliance with the Ontario Building Code and associated regulations.
  • Assist with the completion of building permit applications, as required.
  • Investigate complaints.
  • Perform detailed site inspections to ensure construction is in compliance with the Ontario Building Code and associated regulations.
  • Initiate and participate in enforcement proceedings in cases that contravene the Ontario Building Code and all other applicable municipal by-laws.
  • Prepare letters of compliance, review special occasion permits, conduct coordinated inspections with other departments and agencies (e.g., retrofits), and research new products/materials for code compliance.
  • Participate in maintaining a positive public relations program by providing easy-to-understand guidelines and information packages.
  • Enforce the Building By-Law and other related by-laws and maintain accurate and detailed records and ensure adherence to all statutes, regulations, by-laws and other applicable policies and procedures.
  • Provide technical advice to the public, tradespeople and others in the building industry.
  • Maintain a current knowledge of all relevant provincial statutes and regulations and all relevant by-laws and any amendments thereof as well as knowledge of the Zoning By-law(s).
  • During an emergency, declared or otherwise, staffing requirements can be critical. The employee will be available to work irregular hours performing normal tasks or others, as assigned.

  • Must be a member of the Ontario Building Officials Association.
  • Being a Certified Building Code Official (CBCO) is an asset.
  • Must have a Building Code Identification Number (BCIN).
  • Must be fluently bilingual.
  • Good communication skills both oral and written. This includes report writing.
  • Skill in alternate dispute resolution (ADR); formal training in ADR an asset.
  • Computer skills including word processing, electronic spreadsheet applications and Internet.
  • Good time-management skills;
  • Ability to work alone and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated leadership, decision-making, judgment and interpersonal skills.
  • Able to work with a minimum of supervision.
  • Willingness to regularly update training and knowledge.
  • Interest in new technology where it will prove beneficial to the Township.
  • A valid driver’s license.
  • Must provide a satisfactory current Police Criminal Record Check as a condition of employment.
