Project Engineer


This is a Full-time position in Toronto, ON posted October 29, 2017.

Job Description

  • Shall possess proven experience in dealing with the various aspects of a major project.  Be able to demonstrate a good working knowledge of contractual, financial and technical matters.  Does not have to be an expert in any of these fields but must be able to understand and apply the detailed knowledge of specialists. 
  • Participate in the development of project and engineering execution strategies.
  • Manage and coordinate the progress of the engineering work in accordance with the project scope, budget and schedule.
  • Develop, coordinate and maintain project schedules to ensure cost, quality and schedule objectives are met.
  • Develop and recommend improvements to project work processes.
  • Inspire confidence to Management and Customers by their skills in presentation, negotiation and reaction to problems.
  • Controlling the budgets of assigned projects within cost limits acceptable to Management whilst maintaining company goals of safety, reliability and technical quality.
  • Identify scope changes and request change orders in advance of performing work.
  • Using established project management tools, measure on a monthly basis, the progress of engineering, to ensure that the budgets and schedules are being met, and if necessary, take corrective action.
  • Ensures that the review of documentation is carried out in accordance with the Project Instructions.
  • Prepare project status reports.
  • Ensure that interdisciplinary coordination is carried out in accordance with the Project Instructions.
  • Set agenda and lead project meetings, including preparation of meeting minutes.
  • Reporting to Project Management on the status of assigned projects so that they are always fully apprised of progress, achievements and any problems (potential as well as actual).
  • Prepare engineering and construction work packages as required to support the execution of the project. 
  • Initiate a prompt identification and correction of any engineering issue.
  • Monitor the quality of the work.
  • Oversee and manage the procurement requisition process, review bid and tendering documents to ensure conformance with the project scope and the technical specifications.
  • Develop, maintain and coordinate all interfaces with Construction Management team.
  • Ensure that suitable and sufficient staffing is available to meet the performance objectives of the project.
  • Support the identification and prequalification of vendors and contractors.
  • Clearly communicates the engineering scope, including the technology and the design information, to team members in order to meet project requirements.
  • Review drawings and develop scopes of work. 
  • Manage contractors including change management.
  • Establish and maintain a climate favorable to the application of ethical and professional practices in the execution of the project engineering work.
  • Lead and participate in the development of new business opportunities. 
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering.
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (P. Eng.) or eligible for PEO registration.
  • PMP registration is preferred.
  • Background in Mechanical / Piping Engineering is preferred. 
  • Minimum 10 years in project engineering / management experience.
  • Previous EPC/EPCM experience required.
  • Solid understanding of project management and knowledge of reciprocal effects of the work upon other disciplines/fields.
  • Working knowledge of cost, planning and control methods.
  • Proficiency in a variety of standard project management methods and techniques.
  • Ability to travel for extended periods.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Strong organizational, leadership and teamwork skills.
  • Considerable inter-personal skills are required to deal successfully with the complex relationship within the project team.
  • Ability to meet assignment schedule & deliver quality products under pressure.
  • Self-motivated & goal-oriented.
  • Proficient with MS Office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Proven time management skills and ability to handle multiple tasks and deadlines in a fast paced environment.
