Project Lead


This is a Full-time position in Toronto, ON posted October 29, 2017.

Job Description

We are seeking a Project Lead to join our Process Department. The successful candidate will report to the Process Engineering Manager and the Project Manager on the project to which he or she is assigned.

The person in this position will work closely with all disciplines (engineering, HSE, procurement, quality, etc) and project management to manage studies, design responsibilities, and to resolve design related issues associated with the project.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor degree in Chemical Engineering or equivalent
  • Registered as a Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario or equivalent
  • A minimum of 10 – 15 years of relevant experience in both operations and design
  • Study management experience a must

Skills and Knowledge Required:

  • A comprehensive understanding of the field of process engineering in chemical fertilizer industries, with emphasis in Sulphuric Acid, gained through a combination of operational, design-office and site experience
  • Effective delegation of tasks and time management skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong presentation skills
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Competent analysing outputs and running HYSIS, Aspen, and Hydraulic Systems
  • Knowledge of process safety methodologies: HAZOP, SIL, LOPA among others
  • Self-starter with the ability to work independently when required
  • Strong experience in interdiscipline coordination
  • Competent to coordinate, review and check work carried out by other engineers
  • Capable of working under tight deadlines while achieving objectives
  • Strong interpersonal skills, a positive attitude, and a desire to perform design engineering
  • Experience in leading teams of engineers and designers on projects
  • Foster a spirit of enthusiasm, client focus, team building and continual improvement

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Provide process engineering and technical expertise for clients in the Sulphuric Acid industries
  • Lead and direct the work of professional engineers and technical staff on engineering studies and engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) projects of various sizes and durations
  • Prepare man-hour estimates
  • Participate in project cost estimates
  • Provide technical guidance, working instructions, and support the application of sound Engineering principles and procedures to meet quality and performance standards
  • Support all Engineering activities in compliance with applicable Codes, standards and regulations
  • Proficiency in equipment sizing, hydraulic calculations and heat and material balances
  • Provide input to technical evaluations and trade-off studies
  • Review and direct development of process flow diagrams and piping and instrumentation diagrams
  • Review and direct development of process equipment specifications and data sheets
  • Review and direct development of process safety engineering (relief load estimation, relief system design, and relief valve sizing and selection)
  • Provide input to debottlenecking and troubleshooting studies
  • Provide assistance and support to Operations during commissioning and start-up
  • Write and present detailed engineering reports, studies and briefs
  • Perform trade-off studies
  • Oversee the technical accuracy, completeness, and quality of all process engineering deliverables and activities on a project
  • Must be willing and capable of international travel, as required
  • Act as technical liaison between technology providers, vendors and client’s principal engineering contacts, as required
  • Carry out technical evaluations and vendor documentation review
  • Adhere to quality, health and safety, and environmental requirements
  • Mentors junior engineering staff
  • Actively participate in industry conferences and seminars
