IMHPR – Research

Position Description:

The Institute for Mental Health Policy Research at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health is seeking a Field Coordinator for a part-time, contract (9 months) position in Kettle & Stony Point First Nation, Ontario. The Field Coordinator will support a research project funded by the Canadian Institute of Health Research entitled A strengths-based approach to understanding how First Nations people cope with trauma and stress. This project involves the collection of local data to better understand the strengths and resilience resources that community members draw on to achieve wellness. This position is located in Kettle & Stony Point First Nation, where the Field Coordinator will assist with coordinating and facilitating a participatory action research project involving Photovoice, an empowering arts-based approach to eliciting participants’ perceptions and experiences through the collection of photographs and accompanying narratives.

The Field Coordinator will be responsible for assisting in implementing and overseeing numerous aspects of the research project, including: coordinating and attending meetings with the research team and leaders in the community; recruiting study participants; instructing participants on Photovoice; holding interactive workshops and group facilitation activities as well as one-to-one interviews; obtaining informed consent from study participants; developing and coordinating on-site meetings, workshops and community knowledge sharing activities and events; report writing; and any other duties associated with the research, as required. Adherence to strict protocols for the protection of data privacy and confidentiality is required. As a member of the research team, the Field Coordinator will join and support a healthy workplace that embraces diversity, encourages teamwork and complies with all applicable regulatory and legislative requirements.

This part-time position will have varying hours with an end date of March 31st, 2024. This position will be based in Kettle & Stony Point First Nation.


The successful candidate will have a Master’s degree in health or social sciences or a related discipline. An equivalent combination of education and work experience will be considered. Knowledge related to mental health, substance use, addictions, and/or trauma is considered an asset as well as experience interacting with individuals in a research, academic, and/or service agency setting. The successful candidate will have demonstrated research and project coordination experience, knowledge of research design and methods, and experience with data collection techniques and ability to manage data. Knowledge, training and experience in Photovoice or similar participatory action research methodologies is an asset. Candidates must possess strong organizational skills and be extremely detail-oriented. Preference will be given to candidates with experience working in First Nations communities and with people who have substance dependence and/or mental health issues. Candidates must be proficient in using Microsoft Office programs and must be conscientious, reliable, mature, enthusiastic, and motivated. Strong communication and writing skills are required. This position requires the ability to work both independently and collaboratively while closely following detailed instructions. Candidates require the ability to work effectively in a wide range of settings with individuals from diverse backgrounds. Reliable transportation is required throughout the term of the contract. Preference will be given to candidates who are members or residents of Kettle & Stony Point First Nation. Candidates require the ability to work effectively in a variety of settings with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Please Note: This part-time, contract (9 months) position is NOT part of any bargaining unit.
