Broadcast Systems Technologist  

 

The Broadcast Systems Technologist supports Sun Life’s broadcast services in the delivery of an inspiring array of live corporate virtual and hybrid webcasts, meetings, and events. With broadcast and technical expertise, the technologist employs practised knowledge to ensure that event broadcast services are designed and delivered to meet corporate objectives and business goals within established broadcast quality standards. A robust understanding and experience of in-person, virtual and hybrid broadcast event production from a broadcast av technology and IPnetworking perspective is critical to this role.  
 

The technologist supports the integration of AV Broadcast equipment – both hardware and software – at assigned conference centre & studio spaces and makes sure that systems are properly maintained and operating. As well, coordinate break-fix and regular service support with vendor partners. Key to this roll would be support and administration of key technical management systems & processes from deployment, support and system updates, and conceptual operation to implementing solutions for inventory and equipment management. The technologist would also adopt administrative and operational processes when required. The technologist is responsible for budget and expense coordination as well as identifying innovative strategies for cost-saving.  

 
With an astute knowledge of the latest event production and broadcast technology trends, the technologist supports the broadcast operational standards, event spaces, production configurations, services and management processes. Assists in setting policies and procedures to elevate the practices of the entire team. The technologist contributes to the evolution and strategy of our services by conducting research and development, testing new platforms, and supporting the training and onboarding of new equipment and best practices 

 

A creative solutions expert, the technologist guides and influences partners and team members on the broadcast approach. The technologist is an exceptional collaborator, building trust and alliances with stakeholders and team members, developing experiences that align with Sun Life’s business objectives. The technologist leads and contributes to departmental practices, systems and training programs, improving the working processes and skills of the entire technical services team.  

 

This in-office role is based at our Toronto York location. Reporting to the Senior Manager, Broadcast Services & Senior Manager, AV Services, the Broadcast Systems Technologist is a key member of the BES team. The technologist works closely with members of the technical team, as well as the Producing, Multimedia and Operations teams in the delivery of our overall department initiatives. The technologist is a leading member of a multi-site operations team, working closely with other location-based partners to deliver a seamless employee and guest experience in alignment with the Future of Work for Sun Life’s workplaces. 

 

As a resource for business partners across Sun Life, Broadcast and Event Services provides event management, broadcast, AV and multimedia services for a robust portfolio of corporate experiences.  
What will you do?  

  • Support the broadcast and AV over IP production ecosystem, through design, deployment, and maintenance responsibilities. Support of the advanced technical commissioning and operation of technology integrations, platforms, multi-channel systems and video editing and archiving capabilities. Leading implementation of new technology, tools, and systems into regular operation through documentation and training. 

  • Maintenance of broadcast and related IP system operations, managing systems and completing tasks for ongoing maintenance checks, break-fix responses, and completing regular, equipment and inventory resourcing to department standards.  

  • Leading role in implementation and deployment of long- and short-term technical projects. Acting as liaison between Broadcast Event services and the broader Sun Life technology departments in maintaining communication, project requirements and updates and course correction for long term projects. Navigating projects through departmental processes  

  • Leading partners and stake holders with flexible, solution focused customer service skills to quickly adapt, resolve and trouble-shoot technical problems or late-breaking customer needs 

  • Overseeing aspects of broadcast management for conferences, multi-day meetings and town halls that would include designing and delivering on technical broadcast show services and standards for setup, blocking, technical rehearsals & live day execution.  

  • Providing support in creating production show flows, designing technical staffing, directing floor teams, and post-event reporting. 

  • Supervision of team members, vendors, and service providers, providing coaching and direction as required. Supporting other partners as required. 

  • Coordinating and ensuring broadcast financial administration including processing payment requests, purchase orders, chargebacks and reconciliation and reporting for all event related costs is properly completed. Review equipment order requests by other team members.  

  • Utilization of advanced department systems and organizational practices, documenting KPIs and recommending efficiencies and opportunities for the department.  

  • Contribution to the evolution of the venue and virtual service operations through research and learning. Provide recommendation and processes to learn new equipment, systems, and platforms.  

  • Collaborative support for other team members, participating in site improvement projects, cross training and the overall strengthening of our service operations.  

  • Adhere to company policies and industry best practices for the technical processes, pre, during and post-events 

  • Commitment to continuous improvement with the aim of making processes as efficient as possible, while delivering quality results 

  • Occasional travel is required 

 

What you need to succeed?  

  • You’re a well-accomplished event technologist with honed skills and track record of troubleshooting under pressure, knowledgeable with a wide range of media, platforms, and venues, regularly working in close collaboration with event planning, and multimedia teams. 

  • You may have prior education or professional work experience in broadcast, IT and/or computer science with a demonstrated focus in audio and video transmission and distribution 

  • You have 5+ years of professional audio-visual or broadcast technical expertise in a corporate or broadcast event environment. 

  • You have excellent customer service and communication skills and can put partners, executives, and colleagues at ease in high-pressure situations. 

  • Fundamental understanding of base band and digital signal distribution for audio and video. HDMI, HD-SDI, XLR Patch Bay, signal conversion and matrix router configuration.  

  • Fundamental understanding of IP and Network systems, how to build and maintain them. How to monitor activity and where to look for source of problems using tools like Wireshark. Understanding of network-based transmissions protocols that include but not limited to RTMP/S, RTSP, NDI, Dante, SRT, VISCA over IP, OSC and others  

  • Fundamental understanding of IoT and Cloud based applications around firewall traversal, port settings and security best practices for mission critical systems where related to broadcast and av streaming and packet transmission.  

  • Fundamental understanding of PC and MAC software and driver behaviour when it comes to AV applications, graphic cards, NICs, data bus ports and other I/O’s. 

  • You have expert industry knowledge of equipment, systems, and terminology, with advanced technological operational abilities. This may include expert knowledge of AV and Broadcast systems such as video conference hardware & software endpoints, hardware & software video switchers (Newtek Tricasters, Blackmagic ATEMs, Wirecast, Vmix), Virtual Event Platforms (Zoom, MS Teams, Webex, Youtube, Vimeo, Facebook/Workplace) as well as expertise in the MS Office Suite, Adobe creative Suite. 

  • Demonstratable intuitiveness and ability to adapt and learn a wide range of new platforms, production systems, equipment and integrations as technology evolves.  

  • You build strong business relationships with stakeholders, vendors, staff, and team members; you’ve got a strong ability to negotiate and resolve issues smoothly and effectively. 

  • You’ve got expertise leading partners, suppliers, and teams to deliver high quality work. You can lead and manage other team members, training and coaching them to success with partners.   • You have a passion for corporate event experiences, with your finger on the pulse of the latest trends and techniques. 

  • You build strong business relationships with stakeholders, vendors, staff, and team members; you’ve got a strong ability to negotiate and resolve issues smoothly and effectively. 

  • You’re adaptable, resilient, adjusts quickly, maintains effectiveness throughout periods of change, exhibiting tolerance for ambiguity and the ability to lead the team through change and you maintain your effectiveness throughout periods of change and be comfortable with ambiguity. 

 

Preferred skills: 

  • Industry certifications are an asset. 

  • Involvement in industry-related associations 

  • Experience with project management platforms and tools like JIRA, Kanban boards, Visio, MIRA board. 

  • Audio and Video editing.  

  • Live lighting and camera colour correction.
