Power systems engineer – microgrids and energy storage

Job Description We are seeking a Senior Power Systems Engineer Microgrids And Energy Storage to become an integral part of our team at our Winnipeg, Manitoba location.

As technology leaders with over 35 years experience and thousands of renewable energy plus storage projects installed and operating globally, we are growing our Microgrid Engineering Department to further develop this technology and sector.We are looking for a versatile and highly capable power systems engineer to join our team.

He/she will work as part of a growing team of professionals that focus on engineering execution of microgrid system deployments in accordance with contract specifications, quality standards, and safety requirements.

Collaborate with customers on full project lifecycle from technical sales support, system conceptualization and design, project commissioning, and post installation support.Responsibilities:Develop and install electrical components and systemsAssess and modify existing power distribution systemsTroubleshoot relay and data system designsResearch and document relay test resultsTrack project time lines to complete tasks on scheduleEnsure reliable operation of equipment​Qualifications:Previous experience in electrical engineeringFamiliarity with electrical diagnostic equipmentKnowledge of relay design standardsExcellent root cause analysis skillsAbility to prioritize and multitaskYour responsibilities:Typical duties/responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:Technical contribution: Engineering and deployment of microgrid power systems for autonomous management of renewables and energy storage resources.

Design, testing and commissioning of battery and flywheel energy storage systems.

Evaluates, selects and applies standard techniques and procedures to perform engineering assignments.Sales support: Assists with quotations, engineering and product team to build sufficient documents responding to customer’s inquiries such as RFI’s, RFP’s, etc..Contract management: Support in issuing claims (new/change in scope of work, cost impact, time impact, risk quantifications, etc.).

Provides cost effective quality solutions as per customer requirement and delivers within budget and contract.

Ensures adherence to safety standards and mitigation of potential risks.Planning and control: Creates work plans and cost estimates in one’s area of responsibility.

Reviews and approves scope, budget and schedule for assignments and ensures quality deliverables on time and within targeted cost.

Improves effectiveness of work plan in collaboration with other functions.Risk and opportunity management: Completes risk and opportunity assessments and ensures implementation of resulting actions in one’s area of responsibility.

Reports any contract/quality/program/cost issues to management along with recommendations for resolution.Customer: Interacts with customers, officials, contractors and others for preliminary design of microgrid control and storage systems.

Strong customer service and communication personality to support their engineering capability.Supply chain management: Collaborates with the Supply Chain function to ensure that technical requirements for equipment or services are communicated and agreed to with potential suppliers.

Provides technical evaluation of supplier proposals and accepts as fit for purpose supplied equipment or services.Technical leadership and knowledge sharing: Coaches, provides support and technical advice to colleagues for engineering and commissioning on microgrid related projects.

Maintains network of engineering professionals and share engineering best practice across different projects and disciplines.

Must have excellent communications and writing skills as well as tact and professionalism working with others.Processes and tools: Develops, selects and applies standard techniques, procedures and tools.

Ensures that engineering activities comply with required safety regulations and contractual requirements.

Reports processes and tools inefficiencies and suggests ideas for improvements.Performing electrical studies (Incl load flow, short-circuit, DC & AC arc-flash and grounding studies).

Modelling and analyzing solar plus energy storage and microgrid systems using homerpro software.Your background:Basic QualificationsBachelor’s Degree in electrical engineering and 5+ years of experience in Photovoltaic systems, control systems, power systems engineering, power electronics and/or energy storage system designPreferred QualificationsCapability in one or more of these areas is critical as the position will be required to work in a wide range of engineering subjects.PLC programming experience in industrial, power generation or distribution environments.Engineering and/or commissioning of power electronics devices including energy storage and/or solar inverters.Distribution system protection design and engineering, distribution level interconnection.Familiarity or experience with renewable energy preferred Photovoltaic system.
