The Opto Mechanical Design engineer will be responsible for the physical design of a Lidar Optical Sub-Assembly (LOSA) intended to be deployed in automobiles as part of a LIDAR sensing system.

The Opto Mechanical Design engineer will contribute mechanical engineering expertise as a member of a multi-disciplinary product development team.

Applying a solid knowledge of mechanical engineering principles to develop new solutions and to evaluate the merits and risks of alternative concepts will be a critical part of this role.

Knowledge of FEA and CFD simulation tools such as ANSYS Workbench and Icepak is a plus.

The Opto Mechanical Design engineer will prepare engineering drawings of the required parts and assemblies using 3D solid-modeling CAD tools, develop fully documented detailed mechanical designs of products and the tooling required to fabricate these products.

Key Responsibilities Opto Mechanical Engineer is responsible for developing Lidar packages and components for use in Automotive systems.Perform structural and thermal FEA on Lidar packages.Lead mechanical design of new products and complex manufacturing tooling’s (e.g., mechanical/thermal/structural/component issues) from design through qualification phase.Develop tooling/fixtures/equipment for reduced touch time, repeatability and automation.Select and interact with vendors for high performance and low cost components.Transfer and qualify products and equipment to offshore CM.

Qualifications Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical EngineeringKnowledge of the theory and practice of structural mechanics, materials science, heat-transfer, machine design, dynamics, cooling of electronics, shock and vibration, EMC, Design for Manufacturability.Experience in the field of electronics packaging.Demonstrated detailed knowledge of common product fabrication processes including CNC machining, precision sheet metal, die-casting and thermoplastic injection molding.

In-depth working knowledge of the design rules that apply for each fabrication process.

Knowledge of these processes is demonstrated by a track record of successful detailed mechanical product designs.Demonstrated ability to conduct tolerance analysis, apply Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing, apply statistical tolerance methods.Demonstrated facility with all aspects of mechanical design documentation including drafting standards, engineering change process, and documentation control within a Product Lifecycle management tool.Demonstrated track record of applying excellent design judgment, engineering skills and meeting deadlines.Highly proficient in the use of a 3D solid modeling mechanical CAD tool such as SolidWorks or Solid Edge.Demonstrated ability to learn quickly on the job.

Highly Desired Qualifications MS/PhD in mechanical engineering or equivalent with 5+ years relevant experience highly desired.Knowledge of adhesives, solders and thermoset epoxies.Knowledge and experience of applying contemporary Quality processes.Knowledge of Reliability Engineering principles and practice.Experience in the design of production processes and tooling.

Experience in the automotive or automotive electronics industry and familiarity with the common governing specifications in the industry.

Experience with hermetic packaging of electronics, microwave devices or optical devices.
