Job Description The Canadian Commodity Tax team provides GST/HST, QST, and PST advisory, compliance, and audit support for all business units and functions within Manulife.

As Analyst / Senior Tax Analyst, you will report to the AVP, Commodity Tax and will support the day-to-day operations of the Commodity Tax function.

You will be responsible for tax returns filings and tax research to provide advice to our business units.

This role provides the opportunity to gain knowledge of the unique commodity tax rules that affect financial institutions and to sharpen one’s data analytical skills.

Key Accountabilities: Prepare and analyze monthly GST/HST, QST, and PST returns on a timely and accurate basis.

Prepare and analyze annual GST/HST & QST returns for selected listed financial institutions on a timely and accurate basis, including annual information returns.

Prepare and review all commodity tax account reconciliations on a periodic basis and communicate with the business on necessary accounting entries.

Adopt a mindset of continuous process improvement and automation of the compliance and reconciliation function and documenting procedures.

Develop an understanding of the products and services offered by Manulife and provide advice on commodity tax questions from the business units.

Review the accrued HST recovery model on a monthly basis; and assist with the development of HST recovery rates in accordance with Manulife’s ITC methodology.

Build relationships with other business units and functions to better understand internal accounting models, processes, admin systems, and controls.

Act as liaison between government tax authorities and the business for audits and enquiries.

Perform system testing and data analysis related to commodity tax controls and processes.

Remain current on commodity tax legislative and administrative changes and highlight impacts and required changes to business processes and systems.

Knowledge/Skills/Competencies/Education: Accounting designation preferred 3 to 5 years of relevant experience (1 to 2 years for analyst) Outstanding written and oral communication skills Strong accounting, analytical and problem-solving skills Ability to prioritize tasks with overlapping deadlines Effective teamwork skills Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications Advanced knowledge of Excel, specifically the ability to manipulate large volumes of data through advanced formulas (e.g.

INDEX/MATCH, SUMIFS, and array formulas).

Aptitude to learn new technology, including: Excel
