Job Description: Reporting to the President of Sun Life Global Investments and Senior VP, Investment Solutions, this role will be responsible for the build out and overall leadership and direction of the governance and business controls functions for the Sun Life Global Investments solutions and products (mutual funds, segregated funds, GICs, annuities).

What will you do?

This role will lead the overall governance framework, adherence to compliance and risk policies and effectiveness of controls as it relates to all facets of the Sun Life Global Investments business (e.g.

sales practices, unitholder policies, 3rd party/sub-advisor oversight, regulatory filings, Funds’ Independent Review Committee).

The incumbent will also work with the President, leadership team and partners in Legal, Compliance and Risk to make sure that the business has effective processes and governance structures in place to manage new, updated or existing regulatory requirements and to provide direction and oversight of ad hoc cross-department projects.

What do you need to succeed?

This position requires an in-depth understanding of the mutual fund industry, segregated fund and annuities business, all operational supporting functions, and a strong knowledge of compliance and applicable regulatory requirements for Investment Fund Manager, Portfolio Manager and Commodity Trading Manager categories of registration.

Main Accountabilities: Governance and Risk Management Design, implement and operate an effective governance and control structure, and ensure the business has robust risk management practices in place.

Understands how Sun Life’s Risk Management Framework, Risk Appetite Policy and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities of Sun Life Global Investments.

Promotes a strong operational risk culture throughout Sun Life Global Investments.

Proactively identifies risk, analyzes potential risks and ensures those risks are aggregated/escalated to the appropriate risk owners.

Works closely with functional departments to oversee the development and implementation of controls as well as the monitoring and assessment of the effectiveness of controls.

Participates in Sun Life’s Canada Risk Oversight, Market Conduct Oversight, Financial Risk, and Investment Solutions Risk Committees as well as SLGI’s Risk and Compliance Committee and Investment Governance Forum.

Responsible for the administration of the Independent Review Committee (IRC) including communication with the Chair and Members, development of meeting materials, support for independence and effectiveness assessments, succession planning and onboarding, etc.

Acts as the Regulatory Compliance Management (RCM) Officer for Sun Life Global Investments Consulting and Project Management Responsible for governance processes to ensure the timely and accurate preparation of regulatory materials (investment fund point of sale and continuous disclosure documents) and ongoing reporting obligations of the firm.

Identification, research and implementation of opportunities to improve productivity and execution.

Team Management The incumbent is accountable to create and maintain an organization of talented, capable and highly engaged employees empowered to execute exceptionally well.

Competencies: Success in creating an operational vision and implementing it to achieve efficiency, control and scalability.

Back-ground in process management and/or a controls function Extensive mutual fund industry background, with a strong understanding of regulatory requirements as they impact business activities (e.g.

NI 31-103, NI 81-101, NI 81-102, NI 81-105, NI 81-107, Guideline G2), knowledge of the regulatory environment, including challenges and upcoming trends.

Experience working in an OSFI-regulated environment, with alignment to a three lines of defense model.

Proactive and self-motivated with strong problem solving abilities and the ability to effectively prioritize in a diverse and fast paced environment Proven leadership, coaching and mentoring skills Strong written and verbal communication skills and organizational skills, with a positive attitude and proven ability to negotiate and influence others to obtain desired results Strong partnership and relationship building skills
– ability to work effectively with leaders across the organization, as well as external partners and customers Qualifications: Professional designation such as MBA/CFA/CA is an asset Extensive relevant work experience in the Mutual Fund industry (segregated fund industry experience an asset) Extensive knowledge of applicable securities legislation and insurance regulations Extensive experience in operational activities of an investment fund manager, portfolio manager and segregated fund provider Some travel may be required, post-Covid The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted.

It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors.

In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance.
