Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) Teacher
Part Time (Evening), Contract (Ending March 31, 2019)

TNO – THE NEIGHBOURHOOD ORGANIZATION (TNO, formerly Thorncliffe Neighbourhood Office) is a community based multicultural, multi-service agency whichoffers a broad range of programs to serve Thorncliffe Park, Flemingdon and the surrounding communities through strengthening the quality of individual and community life.

TNOprovides programs and services which include settlement and language classes for newcomers, employment services, child, youth and family support services that are offered in more than 20 languages. Over the last 30 years TNO has served thousands of individuals and families.


Program/Project Description:

The Language and Labour Market program stream provides services that facilitate social, economic and civic integrations of newcomers into the community and the society at large. Services provided include needs assessment, language training, service planning, information and referrals, reception and orientation, interpretation and introduction to community resources.


Position Summary:

The LINC Teacher coaches the LINC learners who are newcomers to Canada as per the LINC PBLA curriculum and Canadian Language Bench-mark (CLB) standards to help the learners achieve fluency in English to help them integrate into the Canadian society and the economy. The position is responsible for developing the learner’s service plan jointly with the learners. This position also requires developing an outreach strategy for the neighbourhood, newcomers and their families. Supports and actively engages in TNO’s community development principles and initiatives (Derived from current TNO’s Strategic Directions).


Main Tasks & Responsibilities:

  • Teach lessons through oral presentations, interactive sessions and role plays
  • Use audio/video equipment to present information
  • Provide photocopies of lessons and homework assignments
  • Runs mock sessions (example, citizenship ceremonies and elections)
  • Prepare lesson plans according to learners abilities
  • Create and update all required reports including monthly reports and plans. Submit monthly curriculum reports as per requirements
  • Prepare and administer written and oral tests based on lessons
  • Prepare report cards
  • Evaluate learners based on their performance in class tests as per PBLA guidelines
  • Actively participate in program’s community development activities including advocacy, outreach and community engagement activities.
  • Be part of a newcomer network of community based development
  • Supervise and or train interns, volunteers and practicum students
  • Collaborate with localized community events
  • Other duties as assigned



  • The minimum level of education preferred is a Bachelors Degree in English or English language teaching.
  • Must be Ontario TESL Certified



  • One to three years of experience in TESL and experience of teaching PBLA LINC curriculum
  • Knowledge of Canadian Language Benchmark literacy – level 8
  • Experience teaching learners with a diverse and multicultural background


 Language Proficiency:

  • Excellent oral and written English communication skills



  • Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL)


Working Conditions:

Hours of Work:

This position would be required to work regular hours for 9 hours per week, and flexible between 8:30AM to 8:00PM besides evening shifts and weekends as decided by program requirements. This position will be subjected to a layoff without compensation for Winter Break and March Break, and Summer Break.



This position will be located within any of TNO’s service locations based on community and program requirements. The locations (multiple) for this position may be added or moved to new addresses in the future according to the community and program requirements.
