The Opportunity:

At Challenger, the Industrial Engineer is responsible for providing operational data support, data analysis, and recommendations for a variety of corporate initiatives, leveraging analytical/low code workflow tools. This role is a high-level engineering position responsible for overseeing the workflow of process development projects from start to finish. The individual will also be responsible for customer-specific network design and optimization. The ideal candidate applies Industrial Engineering concepts and techniques to Truck Scheduling processes and has the ability to work with combinatorial optimization problems.

This role requires a candidate with excellent analytical skills, an ability to summarize data in a simple manner and the capacity to coordinate with a variety of internal and external stakeholders to deliver on projects and process improvements. The individual is also accountable for liaising with various departments to develop action plans and create technical solutions to help address the identified opportunities.

The chosen candidate will be a critical thinker with extensive experience in process design and the ability to work independently to complete a broad range of analysis while also being able to work in a team to collaborate and support on a wide variety of performance and profit-related initiatives.

Key Accountabilities:

Dedicated Lane Optimization – 35%

  • Using in-house processes, design customer-specific lane optimization for Challenger’s largest customers on a regular basis.
  • Apply Industrial Engineering concepts and techniques to Truck Scheduling processes.
  • Complete monthly changeover design within the TMS system to minimize resources and ensure an optimized network.
  • Complete annual pricing reviews.

Process Improvement & Implementation – 30%

  • Use fundamental Process Engineering methodologies coupled with Design thinking (user centric) methodologies to identify, analyze, and document current business processes.
  • Apply sound Flowcharting practices.
  • Evaluate and design the workflow process.
  • Prioritize the execution of process engineering to align with company vision.
  • Apply process improvement methodologies to all initiatives, always place emphasis on the problem, not the solution.
  • Optimizes productivity by designing, implementing, and testing new procedures.
  • Assembles reports to document process status and changes.
  • Tracks metrics to discover areas for improvement and monitor upgrades.
  • Provides thorough instructions for successful implementation of process changes.
  • Conducts risk assessments.
  • Assesses compliance with applicable safety and quality standards.
  • Consistently liaise with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Contributes to departmental efforts by accomplishing related tasks as needed.

Operational Analytics and Data Recommendations – 30%

  • Support operational projects, provide analysis and data-driven recommendations as needed.
  • Liaise with Operations team members.
  • Leverages Low Code Development Applications (including but not limited to Alteryx, Knime, etc.) to conduct deep data analysis on network performance; reports out periodically.
  • Leverages data visualization tools such as Power BI to create dashboards that provide insightful information for the organization.
  • Understands the business problems we are seeking to create solutions for.

Project Management – 5%

  • Establish and implement a formal change management program.
  • Create reports with cost and time estimates for each project
  • Lead or enhance operational projects; provides analysis and data-driven recommendations as needed.

Continuous innovation and skill development – Self-driven

  • Focuses on continuous skill development and learning in following areas:
    • Low Code Development Application (Knime, Alteryx, others)
    • Change management
    • Project management
    • SQL
    • Python Coding
    • Machine Learning
    • Data Management
    • Process Mining
    • Process Standardization
    • Six Sigma Practices
  • Performs other duties as required

Working Conditions:

This position will be working in an office environment, using typical office equipment. This position may require occasional travel to other Challenger locations.

What You Need To Be Successful In This Role:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or a related field required.
  • 2+ years of experience in an Industrial engineering role.
  • Experience with process simulations and standard operating procedures.
  • Lean Six Sigma Certification considered strong asset.
  • Experience with Low Code Development applications such as Alteryx or Knime an asset.
  • Experience with Microsoft Power BI an asset.
  • Experience with Microsoft Visio an asset.
  • Advanced Microsoft Office skills, in-depth knowledge of Excel required.
  • Experience with SQL, Python and R Script considered an asset.
  • Experience in Transportation and Supply chain an asset.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Time management skills: Flexibility to adjust to shifting, competing priorities and deadlines.
  • Able to collaborate with a variety of stakeholders and work effectively with multiple departments, while also working independently at times to solve problems with ambiguous solutions.
  • Ability to apply critical thinking and problem solving.
  • Resilient and adaptable to change.
  • Highly developed written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to prepare and deliver presentations.
