Program Facilitator, Homework Club

Location and Hours of Work: 

6 hours per week

Tuesdays and Thursdays 2:30pm to 5:30pm

Position Type: 

Temporary (until March 31, 2018, with possibility of extension)

TNO – THE NEIGHBOURHOOD ORGANIZATION (TNO, formerly Thorncliffe Neighbourhood Office) is a community based multicultural, multi-service agency which offers a broad range of programs to serve Thorncliffe Park, Flemingdon Park, and the surrounding communities through strengthening the quality of individual and community life.


Program/Project Description:

Homework Club program focuses on after school support in academics, social, recreational, and behavioral for children of 7-12 years. This program is available during the school year from October until June. It offers individualized lesson plans for children to play, relax, and interact with peers.


Position Summary:

The Homework Club Program Facilitator is responsible for the school age children and the environment that they are in.  They provide educational and recreational programs and services according to the Day Nurseries Act and interact in a positive and supportive manner to enhance children’s learning. They must also critically ensure the emotional and physical health and safety of each child and be sensitive to their unique cultural heritage and values. Homework Club Program Facilitator also supports and actively engages in TNO’s community development principles and initiatives (It’s derived from current TNO’s Strategic Directions).

Main Tasks & Responsibilities:

  • Plans a weekly program
  • Plans, implements, and cleans-up  activities for the program
  • Ensure program’s safety by following provincial safety regulation
  • Facilitates activities, supports and monitors children based on their developmental level with respect to their culture and values
  • Provides resources and materials to the children according to their needs
  • Interact with  parents, school staff, public in general
  • Participate in house – keeping activities
  • Purchase supplies and refreshment for program
  • Maintains budget records for founder
  • Develops work-plan and maintain required program records and submits required weekly and monthly reports as requested by management of the agency
  • Supervises and/or trains interns, volunteers and practicum students
  • Actively participates in program’s community development activities including advocacy, outreach and community engagement activities
  • Other related duties as assigned




  • The minimum level of education preferred is a Community College Diploma in Early Childhood Education
  • Must possess successful and valid police clearance for vulnerable sector/ First Aid & CPR certification/ tuberculosis test result



  • Two to three years of experience in working with school age children in children services institutions
  • Demonstrated experience in behavior management of large group of children aged 7-12.
  • Experience working with low-income, multi-racial, multi-lingual newcomer communities
  • Experience working from an integrated anti-oppression, LGBTO+ positive framework



  • Superior oral and written communication skills in English and another language is an asset
    • Proficiency in the use of computers including word and data processing, designing flyers and presentation; projectors, cellphones, phones, fax machines, printers and photocopiers and social media
    • Proven experience in team work and also working independently
    • Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills
    • Ensures that all records are kept confidential and secure

Good understanding of child development and needs of children Strong interpersonal skills to communicate sensitively and effectively and build rapports with children and adults in diverse setting

Working Conditions:

Hours of Work:

This position is temporary position up until the March 2018 (with possibility of extension). Successful candidate would be required to work regular hours for  6 hours per week on Tuesdays and Thursdays 2:30pm to 5:30pm., and flexible between 8.30 AM to 8:00 PM besides evening shifts and weekends as decided by program requirements.

The Homework Club Program has an layoff without compensation during March Break from March 12, 2018 to March 16, 2018.



This position will be located within any of TNO’s service locations based on community and program requirements. The locations (multiple) for this position may be added or moved to new addresses in the future according to the community and program requirements.
